Welcome to the official Akouson Classical page of Middlesex University Music Department.
The Music group at Middlesex has a vibrant character that is like no other university, partly because of its attractive country park setting, partly the international flavour of the student community, partly because the Music staff are practicing professional musicians as well as scholars, and partly because of the distinctive nature of the courses in music that we offer:
* BA Music (Performance)
* BA Music (Composition)
* MMus Popular Music
* BA Jazz
* BA Music & Arts Management
* PGCE (Music)
* MA Music
* MA Jazz Performance
* PhD
Year One in all undergraduate programmes offers a firm foundation in different areas of the subject and allows for specialisation from Year Two, for example in Composition or Performance. The Third Year also allows students to take modules that will help them in the work place after graduation (for example 'Music Promotion') and there are 'proposition' modules from semester 4 which allow for the study (either practical or theoretical) of specialised topics or projects not addressed in the main modules.
The BA Music & Arts Management programme is more business focused from the very beginning, and students gradually acquire all the knowledge and skills required to run arts and music organisations, from practical and logistical skills to legal and financial knowledge.
The teaching is holistic and practical wherever possible, so that all the basic activities of musical study - listening, composing, performing - are linked to musical experiences. This is so important, after all, it is probably the expressive or emotional reaction to music that drew you to its study in the first place. We try never to lose sight of this, and our studies always attempt to go beneath the surface of the music. Hopefully you will find a broader musical education at Middlesex, and as well as being taught to play, compose, lead workshops, or promote music, you will also begin to understand more of what is behind all music, its 'aesthetic'.
In case this all begins to sound somewhat ephemeral and idealistic, it is important to say that all our Music programmes are taught by a Music staff who are highly practical (and approachable) and many of whom are nationally or internationally known in their particular musical specialisms. The academic community in Music includes eminent Jazz performers and improvisers, and Classical concert performers who perform and record regularly in the UK and abroad; composers in both the Classical and Jazz traditions whose work is performed, published and broadcast internationally; musicologists whose articles and monographs appear regularly in national and international conferences and symposia. This means that, crucially, students have regular contact with the professional music world.
The University has a Professor of Performance, and since 2003, a visiting Professor of Piano (Martino Tirimo) who gives regular performance masterclasses. There is also a String Quartet in Residence (Allegri Quartet) who visit several times a year to work with performance students and to rehearse and perform student compositions. We encourage students to make full use of what is one of the best musical resources in the world - London - and to engage with the many exciting musical events happening there throughout the year. My own concert series of weekly chamber music recitals in London (London Chamber Music Society at Kings Place), which includes many international artists and ensembles, is free to all students.
