About me
Stephen Aviss is a tenor, currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Although born and brought up in Surrey, England, following a chance meeting with a Swedish singing teacher, Stephen moved to Sweden to train, studying at the University College of Opera and Opera studio in Stockholm. Stephen is currently studying for an M.A. at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he was recently awarded the Connell Grabowksy Prize. He has B.A. Hons degree in English Literature from University College London.

At university he was president of University College London’s Drama Society which naturally meant he was involved in many productions both on stage and directing. Some of the theatre roles he has played include Agamemnon in Agamemnon (Aeschylus), Brutus in Julius Caesar (Shakespeare), Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Shakespeare), Malcolm in Macbeth (Shakespeare) and Mozart in Amadeus (Shaffer). He was awarded colours for drama.

Stephen’s operatic debut was at Folkoperan in Stockholm, singing the role of Regi Assistenten in the newly written opera Zarah by Anders Nilsson. Whilst studying in Sweden, Stephen sung roles including Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, Danillo in The Merry Widow by Lehar and the title role in Gounod’s opera Faust. His British debut was with Surrey Opera, singing the role of Fenton in Nicolai’s opera Die lustige Weiber von Windsor. Recently Stephen has covered the role of Ruggero for British Youth Opera’s production of La Rondine at the Peacock Theatre.

Stephen has also performed many concerts internationally, including a Viennese Evening with the Karlshamn Orchestra in Sweden, a Neapolitan concert at the Place des Vosges, Paris and a concert at The Royal Naval College in London. He has toured extensively in Sweden and Norway singing both Lieder and opera. In May 2009, he was delighted to accept an invitation to sing at the Palace of Versailles as part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Weizmann Institute. Television work includes a special performance of The Office, The Opera for BBC’s Comic Relief.

Recent events have included Handel's Samson with The Hurst Green Singers and Alfredo in the European Camber Opera’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata in Kuwait. Forthcoming events include The Messiah with the Shoreham Singers and a concert at the Savile Club in London.
